First Time at a Strip Club in Melbourne? What to Expect on a Bucks Night
Quick answer: for a first visit to a Melbourne strip club, bring photo ID, dress smart casual, arrive in reasonable shape and book a group package if there are 10 or more of you. Inside, watch the stage, ask the price before any dance, keep your hands to yourself, keep phones away and tip if you’re enjoying the show.
If half the group has never been, that’s normal. This guide covers what actually happens, from the queue to the end of the night, at Melbourne’s CBD clubs: Centrefold Lounge at 22 King Street, Private Eyes at 14 King Street and The Men’s Gallery at 601 Lonsdale Street.
Strip clubs are strictly 18+. Everything below assumes every person in your group is over 18 and carrying photo ID.
Before you go: the three things that get groups turned away
Most bad first nights go wrong before anyone gets inside. Brief the group on these a few days out.
1. Photo ID, for everyone. All three clubs are 18+ and check ID at the door. Centrefold Lounge asks for valid government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s licence or passport, for every guest, and management can refuse entry. “He’s obviously 30” doesn’t count. No ID means no entry, and that includes the buck.
2. The dress code. Smart casual is the standard.
- Centrefold Lounge: collared shirts, neat jeans or trousers and enclosed shoes. No thongs, singlets, sportswear, workwear or hi-vis.
- The Men’s Gallery: smart casual preferred. No singlets, steel-capped boots, flip-flops, caps or workwear.
- Private Eyes: check with the venue when you book.
If the buck has spent the afternoon in a costume, pack him a change of clothes.
3. Arriving in reasonable shape. Licensed venues serve under Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) rules. Door staff can refuse entry to anyone who is visibly intoxicated, and that includes the guest of honour. Have a proper feed beforehand (our CBD dinner guide has ideas), keep the pre-drinks to one bar and drink water between rounds.
Getting in: entry, bookings and timing
Walking in or booking? Small groups can usually walk in during opening hours and pay entry at the door. For a bucks group of 10 or more, booking a group package is the easier option: the venue knows you’re coming, the shows are organised and the buck’s arrival is sorted. See how group packages work before you choose.
What entry costs. It depends on the venue, the day and the time you arrive.
- Centrefold Lounge: club entry isn’t a fixed published price, but the buck gets in free when the group books a package.
- The Men’s Gallery: every function package includes free entry for the guest of honour, plus discounted entry for the group on bookings before 9pm.
- Private Eyes: each VIP package includes entry for a set number of guests (up to 15, 20 or 25 depending on the package), with extra guests at $10 each.
Always ask for the total for your group, including entry, before you pay a deposit.
Opening hours, as published by each venue:
- Centrefold Lounge: Monday to Thursday 8pm–4am, Friday and Saturday 7pm–7am, Sunday 8pm–5am.
- The Men’s Gallery: Monday to Thursday and Sunday 6pm–5am, Friday and Saturday 6pm–8am (closing times may vary).
- Private Eyes: Wednesday to Sunday from 8pm until late. It’s closed Monday and Tuesday.
When to arrive. Arrive together at your booked time, not in dribs and drabs.
Inside: how the night works
The main stage. Every club runs stage shows through the night. At Private Eyes, a new entertainer takes the main stage about every seven minutes. Grab a drink, find a spot and watch. Nobody expects more.
Dances. Entertainers may come and introduce themselves and offer a private dance. A polite “not right now, thanks” is fine, and you’ll be left to enjoy the night. If you do want a dance, ask the price before it starts. The Men’s Gallery publishes its rate: private dances start from $50 for 10 minutes. At other venues, ask staff or the entertainer first.
Group shows for the buck. This is what a bucks package is for. At Centrefold Lounge, the packages are built around 20-minute shows for your group. At The Men’s Gallery, packages include three or six shows. The details are in our VIP areas and group packages guide.
VIP areas. Bigger groups can book reserved seating or a VIP area. At Private Eyes, the top package includes a roped-off reserved seating area on the main floor, and the VIP Lounge has its own stage. These are open areas within the venue, so expect a reserved space rather than a closed-off room.
Etiquette: the house rules that matter
Entertainers are professionals at work, and every club enforces its own house rules. Security and staff will step in if those rules are broken. The short version:
- No touching unless the venue’s rules say otherwise. The Men’s Gallery is a strict no-touching venue. Assume the same everywhere until a staff member tells you otherwise, and always follow the entertainer’s lead.
- No photos or videos. Keep the phones in pockets inside. The Men’s Gallery bans camera glasses and recording equipment outright. Take the group photo outside.
- Tip the stage if you’re enjoying the show. It’s customary, and it’s appreciated. At Private Eyes, the bucks packages include the club’s own tipping dollars for the main stage.
- Respect a “no”. That applies to entertainers, staff and the rest of the crowd. If someone says no, that’s the end of it.
- Keep the stitch-up good-natured. A bucks show can involve some fun at the buck’s expense. Make sure he’s in on it, and tell the venue when you book if anything is off limits.
- Listen to staff. If security or a host asks something of your group, go with it. They’re there to make the night work for everyone.
Women and mixed groups are welcome. Private Eyes describes itself as female-friendly, and The Men’s Gallery says women are always welcome. If the bridal party wants to join the bucks for part of the night, that’s an option.
Money: what to bring
Budget for entry (unless your package includes it), drinks, any dances and tips. Set a per-head amount before the night and collect it in advance, so the best man isn’t chasing payments the next morning. Our bucks night cost guide breaks down a realistic budget.
Getting home
Plan the trip home before you go out. On Friday and Saturday nights, Night Network trains, trams and buses run through the night across Melbourne. After about 1am, trains run from Flinders Street, so check PTV’s current timetable. Rideshare and taxis are available from the CBD. Nobody drives. Our transport guide covers the options.
